How NMR sees inside a sealed container

  1. 1. Align

    Hydrogen nuclei in water, oils and most organic material act like tiny compass needles. Inside the magnet, they line up with the field.

  2. 2. Pulse

    A short radio-frequency pulse tips them out of line. Radio waves pass straight through plastic and glass, so nothing gets opened.

  3. 3. Listen

    As the nuclei relax back into line they give off a faint radio signal. How fast it fades depends on what they're in, so a good batch and a bad one sound different.

The one limit: Metal blocks radio waves, so cans and foil packaging can't be measured. Plastic and thin glass are fine. Find out why this is.
